Launceston City High Schools joined with Northern Tasmania Development to stage the inaugural Australian Business Week for Year 10 students at the Sir Raymond Ferrall Centre, University of Tasmania.

The program aims to generate entrepreneurial skills and combines both teachers and business mentors guiding the teams through the ownership and management of a simulated hospitality business which they design from the ground up!

Eighty students from Prospect, Riverside and Queechy High Schools and Launceston Christian School commenced the week by visiting their hypothetical hotel site at the Silt Ponds near the edge the Tamar River. Alderman Jodie Campbell, Deputy Mayor from the Launceston City Council addressed the participants to mark the Opening Ceremony which was sponsored by the Mercure Hotel Earlington Launceston.

Major sponsors the Sebel Launceston provided each team with an extensive familiarisation tour and management workshop while Scott Curran, Director of ARTAS, Architects and Planners delivered a series of detailed talks on the design and planning of such a building. Teams also surveyed Launceston’s CBD for hospitality providers and analysed short falls to exploit in the finished design of their own hotels.

Over the five days teams skilfully implemented their hotel management strategies and conveyed this information by Oral and Written Report to an audience and judging panel. Their architectural designs were judged by leading business professionals in this field.

Each team generated an array of promotional material including a 30 second video commercial, brochures, business cards, examples of service, restaurant menus, fine food and non-alcoholic drinks. Skilfully crafted architectural models were also used to sell the hotel’s image to the public at a Trade Display.

The intensive week of business focused learning culminated with teams vying for representation in the sixteen categories featured in the Awards Program. Northern Tasmania Development congratulates the participating schools and commends the exemplary standards displayed throughout the week.

<itunes:summary>Launceston City High Schools joined with Northern Tasmania Development to stage the inaugural Australian Business Week for Year 10 students at the Sir Raymond Ferrall Centre, University of Tasmania.

Team names include Driftwood, Carpe-Diem, Home Reach Hotel, Tamar River Hideaway, The Revir Grand, Riveara and Twin Rivers Resort. Administrative support for the project is funded by the Enterprise Learning for the 21st Century program.

Australian Enterprise Week is a Commonwealth Funded Program where schools across Australia undertake an intense week of group business planning activities to simulate real company activities. At the end of the time, classes have to present their findings as well as make a 30 second commercial.

Renton’s company jumped at the chance to be part of the program as it was natural way to make available the wealth of knowledge within the site that would in a practical way, help children learn about the business world.

Results of the competition will be posted here at the end of December.
